Raymond Lewis - Conductor

Raymond Lewis has followed a triple career as a pianist, conductor and organist. Until the last few years during which he has renewed his interest in conducting and early music, most of his time was spent as a pianist, both as soloist and particularly in chamber music in various trios, duos and ensembles. He has made several appearances at the Purcell Room and on the BBC. A former recipient of the 'Ricordi' conducting prize, he is an experienced orchestral and choral conductor. He was, for several years, Director of Music of St Stephen's Rochester Row in Westminster, and has been organist at various London churches. He has played at most of the major cathedrals in the UK, and has recently given recitals at Southwark Cathedral, The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban, and Chichester Cathedral.

As director of the professional period instrument group, Medici Baroque, and of the Medici Chamber Choir, Raymond has performed extensively both in the UK, including an all Bach programme in St John's Smith Square, and in France, including a number of of appearances at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. As a singer he has been a member of various groups and taken part in numerous BBC broadcasts. As pianist, duo partners have included the violinist, Ralph Holmes, Alexander Boyarsky (former principal cellist of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra), and the Pablo Casals' protege, Rohan da Saram. He made his London debuts variously as solo pianist, accompanist, in chamber music, as continuo player, and as a conductor on the South Bank.

As a composer, Raymond Lewis's output includes much church music, and a large scale setting of the Gloria for chorus, baritone soloist and orchestra. His anthem, It came even to pass, was described in the press as 'outstanding'. His compositions have been performed at the Barbican Centre, the Royal Festival Hall, the Farfield Hall, St Alban's Abbey, Southwark Cathedral, Rochester Cathedral, and Liverpool Cathedral.

Raymond Lewis is Director of Music at Orpington Parish Church of All Saints, and conductor of All Saints' Festival Choir and Orchestra. He has been conductor of Orpington Symphony Orchestra since September 2003.
